I'm from the Los Angeles/Southern California region (last 15 years in "West Los Angeles" - Santa Monica, Beverly Hills - and Hermosa Beach, which is in the "Southbay" region) who finds himself today toasting his one year anniversary in New York. My pick...is New Rochelle, just north of the City, 26 minutes flat to Midtown Manhattan...but the prettiest city in the area, ESPECIALLY this close to Manhattan!
33 minutes from my front door to Midtown Manhattan - can't be beat!!
Now, I would 1,000% be living in Manhattan, but I have a tiny little problem: my wonderful fiance, who is from the Stamford, … (more)

Rent will be cheaper the further you are from the subway. Sure Washinton Heights and and Morningside will be cheap but they won't necessarily be safe. Alphabet City and the Financial District are, by my standards, not very cheap unless you are willing to completely sacrifice space. The only area I was able to find that was both affordable and safe ($1k/month in rent with a roommate, $1500/month for a spacious studio) was Yorkville. In general the East side will be cheaper than the West side because the West side has so many more subway lines. But if you're not dead-set on Manhattan you should … (more)

it depends on what you mean by ‘too far from the city’. i would assume that by ‘the city’ you mean manhattan, and if so, here’s the list:
sunnyside, queens
jackson heights, queens
bay ridge, brooklyn
bensonhurst, brooklyn
upper east side from east 86th to east 96th, between 5th Avenue to the East River.
ditmars park, brooklyn
gravesend, brooklyn
red hook, brooklyn
sunset park, brooklyn
pelham parkway, bronx
pelham bay, bronx
throggs neck, bronx
kingsbridge heights, bronx
manhattan, between w. 155th to w. 218th street, west of broadway
sheepshead bay, brooklyn
newport, paulus hook, and downtown jersey city, ho
… (more)

Lower East Side has great small restaurants and bars and relatively affordable for downtown Manhattan. I moved into a place with no fee and first month free for a gut renovated apartment. Only problem with most apartments in the neighborhood is that they are probably the smallest spaces due to most of the buildings being tenements in the early 1900's. My apartment has been called a luxury apartment for midgets by one of my overnight guests. It's really small.

I had good experiences in the Bushwick/Ridgewood area. People like to call it East Williamsburg. But it's Bushwick.
One thing to note here. It's cheap and safe, however the schools are a mess.

It all depends what you consider inexpensive. It's a relative comparison. $1,500 for an apartment would be considered really really cheap by NYC standards, but perhaps you come from a place where you were living like royalty for $700 per month.
That being said, if you are looking for a nice neighborhood with cheap rents, good food options and easy access to Manhattan, I would recommend Astoria, Queens.

There are many safe places, but few inexpensive one. Generally speaking, the further north your are in Manhattan or the further southeast you are, the less expensive the neighborhood, e.g., above 110th St or in Alphabet City. But the cost of rent even in those neighborhoods has skyrocketed over the years.

Ridgewood is in the borough of Queens, in NYC, and is my old neighborhood. It’s ethnicity has changed a lot, but is a good community with good public transit connections. I traveled daily to schools in downtown Brooklyn for eight years from there.

I take it by city, you mean, parts of Manhattan? I think 🤔 , to understand what you are asking, its important to see all of New York as a grouping of neighborhoods. For the most part, much of New York City is safe but safety can depend on who you are, time of day, and streets. It is not uncommon that crime is worse just a few streets over from a safe one.
Not based on statistics, I would say in Queens, Astoria and closer in, Roosevelt Island.
